Adil Akthar, MD

Dr. Akthar completed his training at University of Chicago Medical Center in the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology. He has been actively involved in cancer research during his training with the goal of improving patient outcomes. His work has led to several research grants, presentations at national meetings, and articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals focused on lung and prostate cancer. He also has an interest in resident education and has published articles advocating for interdisciplinary oncology training and has authored a book chapter used by radiation oncology trainees.
Dr. Akthar has a broad base of clinical experience and is well-versed with all cancer types. His experience with a wide selection of radiation techniques allows him to personalize treatment with the goal of optimizing treatment efficacy and minimizing treatment related side effects. He has helped enroll patients on national clinical trials in order to provide them access to innovative treatments, and has earned a Master of Science from University of Chicago focused on applying clinical trial results to patient care. He also serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for medical journals and is active in several professional organizations to stay up to date on leading medical advances. Dr. Akthar is passionate about delivering expert and patient-centered care. As a Chicago native, he feels a close connection to his community and enjoys getting to know his patients. Dr. Akthar chose radiation oncology as a profession for the opportunity and privilege to care for patients who are overcoming cancer.
In his free time he enjoys weekend activities with his wife and children, exploring new restaurants, traveling, playing tennis, and listening to public radio.
