Physicians who have achieved a high degree of experience applying SpaceOAR Hydrogel* may be designated as a SpaceOAR Hydrogel Center of Excellence. For more detailed information, please see below.

Physicians included in the SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel Center of Excellence program have achieved a high degree of experience with SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel*. The clinical and therapy development requirements to achieve SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel Center of Excellence designation are as follows and must be met on an annual basis to maintain Center of Excellence designation:

Clinical requirements

  • The physician must complete SpaceOAR Hydrogel training to become a certified applier.
  • The physician must complete 75 SpaceOAR Hydrogel cases in one year.
  • The physician must submit de-identified data from a minimum of 25 patients measuring the amount of space created by the hydrogel at mid-line. The mean average of space created must be between 0.8 and 1.2 cm.

Therapy development requirements1

  • The physician’s primary practice must maintain their website with current and accurate education information on prostate cancer and available treatments, including SpaceOAR Hydrogel.
  • The physician must complete a quarterly therapy review with a Boston Scientific
    representative to include review of de-identified patient outcomes and best practices.

In order to maintain designation, physicians must meet all requirements on an annual basis. The physician must also deliver educational programs on prostate cancer and treatment options two times a year.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel is intended to temporarily move the rectal wall away from the prostate during the course of radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer, and in creating this space is is the intent of SpaceOAR Hydrogel to reduce the radiation dose affecting the rectum.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel contains polyethelene glycol (PEG). As with any medical treatment, there are some risks involved with the use of SpaceOAR Hydrogel. Potential complications associated with SpaceOAR Hydrogel include, but are not limited to: pain associated with SpaceOAR Hydrogel injection; pain or discomfort associated with SpaceOAR Hydrogel; needle penetration of the bladder, prostate, rectal wall, rectum or urethra; injection of SpaceOAR Hydrogel into the bladder, prostate, rectal wall, rectum or urethra; local inflammatory reactions; infection; injection of air, fluid or SpaceOAR Hydrogel intravascularly; urinary retention; rectal mucosal damage, ulcers, necrosis; bleeding; and rectal urgency.
