Ron, an active runner, tennis player, boater and Harley rider from Boca Raton, Florida, shares his prostate cancer story and experience with SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I live an active lifestyle. I enjoy boating, riding my Harley Davidson and playing tennis. I also love to exercise and run.

How did you find out you had prostate cancer?

From the age of 40, I regularly went for an annual physical and prostate health evaluation. When I turned 60, my PSA came back slightly elevated. My Urologist, Dr. Seskin, recommended that I get an MRI. Because the MRI showed lesions, I had to get a biopsy. Unfortunately, the biopsy came back positive.

Describe your treatment journey. Did you consider any other treatment plans and how did you ultimately decide to choose to add SpaceOAR Hydrogel to your plan?

My Gleason Score was 3+4. Dr. Seskin explained that if he were in my position, he would opt for radiation therapy. He highly recommended this treatment approach with SpaceOAR Hydrogel.

After some research and thought, together we decided to move forward with TomoTherapy™ in combination with SpaceOAR Hydrogel.

How did you hear about SpaceOAR Hydrogel?

My Urologist, Dr. Seskin, recommended SpaceOAR Hydrogel.

How did you tolerate the SpaceOAR Hydrogel procedure?

I tolerated the procedure very well. There was slight discomfort in the beginning, but no complications beyond that. The entire procedure took approximately one hour. Two physicians, Dr. Keisch and Dr. Seskin, placed SpaceOAR Hydrogel. I recall Dr. Keisch say, “That’s it. That’s it – exactly where I want it.” From that point on, I felt even more confident that my surrounding organs would be protected during radiation. When the procedure was complete, I was able to go back to work and exercise without any adverse reactions.

What advice do you have for men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer?

Get SpaceOAR Hydrogel. It allows the physician to optimally treat patients so that the surrounding organs around the prostate are protected from radiation. Also, keep your body strong and be sure to exercise.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel is intended to temporarily position the anterior rectal wall away from the prostate during radiotherapy for prostate cancer and in creating this space it is the intent of SpaceOAR Hydrogel to reduce the radiation dose delivered to the anterior rectum.
